What each of the 6 markets on the Colmar map offers

1. Place des Dominicains Christmas Market
Under the Dominican church, about sixty little wooden chalets offer decorations, tree ornaments, Christmas trees and festive meals. The church's stained-glass windows are lit after dark above the stalls. No entry ticket is needed. The market runs from Monday 23 November to Tuesday 29 December.

2. Place de l'Ancienne Douane Christmas Market
Around the Schwendi fountain, nearly fifty huts line both banks of the Lauch as far as the porch of the Koïfhus. Contemporary creations sit beside traditional Christmas decorations, and after dark the Koïfhus is lit, its Renaissance stairway included. No entry ticket is needed.

3. Place Jeanne d'Arc Christmas Market
Local products fill this market, laid out as a small Alsatian village with half-timbered chalets, a church and animals: foie gras, cold meats, wine, brandies, Christmas biscuits and gingerbread. No entry ticket is needed. Like markets 1, 2, 4 and 5, it closes on Tuesday 29 December.

4. Petite Venise Children's Christmas Market
A market for children, with a path past 43 colourful cottages, a merry-go-round with horses and a mechanical nativity scene. Santa's giant letterbox answers every letter that has a clear return address on the back. From 25 November to 19 December, children sing carols on lit boats along the Lauch on Wednesdays and Saturdays. No entry ticket is needed.

5. Koïfhus Handcraft Christmas Market
This market is indoors, in the Koïfhus, the old customs house, where visitors warm up. About twenty artisans work here: jewellers, hatters, woodcarvers, cabinetmakers, glassmakers, potters and ceramists. Books and artisans' work fill the Décapole room upstairs. No entry ticket is needed.

6. Gourmet Market
Nine cabins run by nine chefs serve dishes from starters to desserts, from oysters to Alsatian specialities, to eat on the spot or take away. Cooking shows run in the centre of the market. It stands at the foot of the Ferris wheel, with views over the city and the Vosges. No entry ticket is needed; the Ferris wheel beside it is a paid ride.

Food and drink at the Christmas Markets in Colmar
Food at the Colmar Christmas Markets starts with mulled wine (vin chaud), the best-known Alsatian Christmas drink, served alongside non-alcoholic mulled apple, orange and strawberry juice.
On the sweet side come bredele, small Christmas biscuits in many flavours; pain d'épices, the Alsatian gingerbread that also hangs on Christmas trees; manala, a brioche shaped like a little man and found from the beginning of December; kougelhopf, a sweet bun-like cake with raisins macerated in kirsch; and Christstollen, a Christmas brioche with candied fruits, cinnamon and almond cream.
Local producers sell cheese, cold meats, honey and foie gras, and the nine chefs of the Gourmet Market cook everything from oysters to Alsatian specialities. At the children's market in the Petite Venise, hot apple juice is on sale too.
