Vienna Christmas Markets, market by market

1. Viennese Christmas Market at Rathausplatz
The Viennese Christmas Market at Rathausplatz (Wiener Christkindlmarkt) fills the square in front of City Hall with stalls of Christmas gifts, tree decorations, handicrafts, confectionery and warming drinks. The Ice Dream rink winds through the illuminated Rathauspark, next to a tree of hearts, a 12-metre carousel and a children's Christmas world with a reindeer train and a nativity trail. Choirs sing in the City Hall on the Advent weekends. It opens daily from 13 November to 26 December 2026.

2. Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz
The Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz (Weihnachtsdorf am Maria-Theresien-Platz) returns in 2026 after a year's break, with a completely new concept, between the Kunsthistorisches and the Naturhistorisches Museum. Its food stalls focus on regional delicacies and specialities from Austria, and both museums run a children's programme while the market is on. No entry ticket is needed. It opens from 20 November to 26 December 2026.

4. K&K Christmas Market at Belvedere Palace
The K&K Christmas Market at Belvedere Palace takes its theme from the imperial and royal (K&K) era, down to the decoration, music and food. At most 35 huts stand in front of the Upper Belvedere, with classic Christmas items, traditional crafts and products from Vienna and the region. Traditional music plays by day, and lounge, jazz and electro swing take over in the evening, with performances and craft demonstrations in between. It runs from 20 November to 31 December 2026.

5. Old Viennese Christmas Market Freyung
The Old Viennese Christmas Market Freyung (Altwiener Christkindlmarkt) sells handicrafts, glass decorations, traditional nativity figures and ceramics. Advent music plays on the square, a daily stage programme brings brass and folk music, children have a puppet theatre, and craftspeople demonstrate wood turning, glass blowing and carving. The opening ceremony on Saturday 14 November 2026 launches a fundraiser for the Stiftung Kindertraum. It runs daily from 14 November to 23 December 2026.

Other things to do in Vienna this winter
Tours, museums and other Vienna attractions, with dates and availability, to combine with a visit to the Christmas Markets.
What to eat and drink at the Vienna Christmas Markets
Hot punch, toasted almonds and the smell of Christmas baking are the classics of Vienna Christmas Market food. Punsch (hot fruit punch) and Glühwein (mulled wine) are poured at Schönbrunn Palace, Schwarzenbergplatz and the University Campus, and the last two add Maroni (roasted chestnuts), Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes) and hot dishes from Austrian caterers. At Schönbrunn Palace the scent of freshly baked Vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent biscuits) hangs over the courtyard.
Am Hof pours its own house bock beer next to its Zirbenpunsch, served in washable ceramic deposit mugs. Türkenschanzpark has a long street-food list: Langos (fried flatbread), Raclette-Brot (raclette on bread), baked potatoes, sausages, vegan dishes, Baumstriezel (chimney cake), heart-shaped waffles on a stick, mini doughnuts and candyfloss.
Several markets put the weight on sourcing. All the food at Art Advent is certified organic, Spittelberg favours sustainable, local, fair-trade and organic products, and Hirschstetten sells organic and regional delicacies. Maria-Theresien-Platz and Stephansplatz focus on regional and traditional Austrian specialities, and Rathausplatz adds confectionery and warming drinks.
