Copenhagen Christmas Markets, market by market

1. Christmas in Tivoli
Christmas stalls selling gifts and holiday treats stand among the trees of Tivoli Gardens, under thousands of lights. Children can call on Santa in his home, and the Elf Train and the Forest Carousel run as Christmas rides. An entry ticket to Tivoli Gardens is needed; rides need a separate Ride Pass. The season lasts from Friday 13 November to Sunday 3 January, and the Gardens are closed on Thursday 24 December.

2. Christmas Market Nytorv & Gammeltorv
Stalls dressed for Christmas sell seasonal goods, along with treats and hot drinks, across Nytorv and Gammeltorv, the two squares beside Strøget. On Nytorv an ice rink lends skates to children and adults, Father Christmas drops by, and there are activities for children. No entry ticket is needed. Opening on Friday 6 November, the market keeps going every day until Monday 21 December.

3. Christmas Market on Højbro Plads
Wooden stalls on Højbro Plads, decorated for the season, carry handmade Christmas ornaments, crafts and gift ideas, plus seasonal food and drink, with stallholders coming from Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Talking trees tell children a Christmas story, a large activity tent hosts families, and music and entertainment run through the season. No entry ticket is needed. Stalls are open each day between Saturday 14 November and Sunday 20 December.

4. Christmas Market at the City Hall Square
Wooden huts in front of Copenhagen City Hall offer Christmas decorations, gifts and seasonal finds, set among Christmas lights and decorated trees. The market is new to the square this December: its organiser ran the Christmas Market on Højbro Plads until 2025. No entry ticket is needed. The huts open on Friday 11 December and trade daily up to Sunday 20 December.

5. Frederiksberg Christmas Market
Local producers, designers, artists and craftspeople run the small stalls, clad in spruce, that gather under the big Christmas tree on Frederiksberg Rådhusplads, in Frederiksberg, a municipality of its own inside Copenhagen. Workshops, jazz and choirs fill out the programme. No entry ticket is needed. Its ten days run from Friday 4 December through Sunday 13 December.

The Swedish church in Østerbro holds a three-day Christmas Market, with volunteers in Swedish folk costumes welcoming visitors. On sale are advent calendars, Christmas figures, candle holders, stationery, home decor and textiles, while food comes from the courtyard and a food store. No entry ticket is needed. Dates: Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November.

The sheep farmers of Zealand hold this Christmas Market indoors at Den Gamle Remise by Trianglen, with room for whole families. Makers sell their own knitwear, ceramics, jewellery and Christmas decorations, and one stand runs a needle-felting workshop. No entry ticket is needed. It takes up a single weekend: Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November.

What to eat and drink at the Copenhagen Christmas Markets
The food at the Copenhagen Christmas Markets changes from site to site: Tivoli's stalls offer æbleskiver (Danish pancake balls), gingerbread hearts, marzipan, pancakes, rice pudding and roast pork sandwiches. On Nytorv and Gammeltorv there is Glühwein (mulled wine) among other hot drinks, Højbro Plads serves warm æbleskiver with gløgg (Danish mulled wine), and the City Hall Square market promises hot drinks and food. Frederiksberg has gløgg, æbleskiver and brændte mandler (caramelised almonds). The Swedish church pours mulled wine and serves meatballs in its courtyard, and keeps gravlax (cured salmon) and ham in its food store. Remisen has lamb or goat sausages in a bun, and its café makes æbleskiver.
