Opening dates of the Salzburg Christmas Markets on the map in 2026
Winterwunderwald (7), a mulled wine stand in the courtyard of the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, opens first, on Wednesday 11 November 2026. The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt (1) follows on Thursday 19 November 2026 together with three other markets, and the season of the 8 Christmas Markets on the map ends on Wednesday 6 January 2027, when Sternadvent and Winterwunderwald close.
The opening day of Thursday 19 November is shared by four markets: the Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz (1), Sternadvent in the Sternarkaden courtyard of the Sternbräu (2), the Hellbrunner Adventzauber at Hellbrunn Palace (3) and the Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz (4). The Christkindlmarkt holds its opening ceremony, with the lighting of the Christmas tree, from 18:00 that Thursday.
The Charity Advent Market on the Alter Markt (6) and the Advent Market at the Salzachsee (8) follow on Friday 20 November. The Advent Market at Hohensalzburg Fortress (5) starts on Friday 27 November, at the beginning of the Advent weekends, and from then on trades only on its market days.
Each market's square or courtyard, its organiser and what it sells are described in the overview of the Christmas Markets in Salzburg.

The Hellbrunner Adventzauber is closed on Monday 23 and 30 November and 7 and 14 December, and opens on Monday 21 December. The fortress market has 14 market days: Friday to Sunday on four Advent weekends, plus Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December.
The 2026 dates on the Hellbrunner Adventzauber site head its English home page, next to the children's area. The fortress market days on the tourist board site come with the daily hours and the courtyard programme.
Which Salzburg Christmas Markets stay open after Christmas?
Four markets on the map end before Christmas Day. The Advent Market at Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Advent Market at the Salzachsee close on Sunday 20 December 2026, the Charity Advent Market on the Alter Markt on Tuesday 22 December. The Hellbrunner Adventzauber stays until Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December.
The other four keep going after Christmas. The Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz stays until New Year's Eve, Thursday 31 December. On Domplatz and Residenzplatz the Christkindlmarkt becomes a New Year's Eve market (Silvestermarkt) from Sunday 27 December and closes on New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027. Sternadvent changes into a winter market once Christmas is over, and it runs with Winterwunderwald until Wednesday 6 January 2027, the Epiphany holiday.
The Sternadvent's own site gives its 2026/27 dates, January included, with the regular and special hours.

The Christkindlmarkt has existed in its present form since 1974, and a song from the end of the 15th century already describes a "Tandlmarkt" held in front of the cathedral. Sternadvent goes back to 1996 and has added its winter market up to 6 January since 2015. The Gassner family has run the Hellbrunner Adventzauber since 2001. The Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz was revived in 1990, and the Advent Market at the Salzachsee opened in 2023.
